Zayde listened to Trei, smiling subtly as he actually grinned at him, but the grin disappeared in a heartbeat, Zay didn’t even have room to say anything. The Crown Prince quickly recalled what he had taken in about Sunste, and his guesses. They all were highly probable, but the truce was the only one that wouldn’t make sense; you couldn’t have everything though. Zayde listened and smiled again, Trei actually sounded mostly like a friend. At least he didn’t sound like an enemy. He even nodded at the whole “monarch” bit, he was spot on for that one. His smile slipped though from his face after a second, and he looked at his sloppy writing, re-reading it and remembering the jist of it again. He looked into Trei’s eyes. They were slightly unfocused, and Zay could tell he was thinking. The only thing that set a little buzzer off in his head was that his expression was carefully guarded, so it seemed natural enough that most people wouldn’t stop to wonder. Zayde was just one of those “special” people, but he also knew it would be stupid to ask what he was thinking. The thing that slightly puzzled him was he couldn’t tell at all besides the guarded expression what he might be thinking of, but he guessed he himself was just having an off night. “Trust,” Zay laughed blandly. “Seems like that’s the only thing that’s saved me from everything. Saved me from losing my leg,” he glanced up to Trei’s silvery green eyes, and let his gaze wander around the room. “Saved me from my parents, Xirra even, saved me from the forest and whatever,” Zayde thought how half were trust, and half weren’t trusting. “Trust is probably the worst thing this earth’s made besides love. And that’s why we’ve both been raised not to trust.” He felt his throat dry, and scrambled for some thoughts he could use. “ Wonder were I’d be right now if it weren’t for trust.” Zay said trust acidly, but then wished he hadn’t. If he hadn’t trusted Trei, who knew where he could have wound up. I could be taking a dirt nap for all I know he shuddered slightly at the thought, the cold dirt surrounding his dead body with only Kari there, no one else. Talk about lonesome. He looked at the bedroom wistfully, he was dead on his feet and it seemed like the room had dropped twenty degrees, but his forehead seemed to be slightly wet with perspiration. Weird… Zay thought, and hoped it didn’t show. They’re talking about being raised monarchs and he’s just about ready to faint. Great prince you are
